THE Bafana Bafana team bound for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico – was given golden send-off in Pretoria on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, just 15 days before they open their World Cup campaign on Thursday (11 June 2026) against Mexico at Estadio Azteca.
Although there were some notable exclusions, most football commentators said the Bafana Bafana’s 2026 World Cup squad is a balanced mix of domestic stars and overseas talent, others adding that the no-nonsense coach Hugo Broos was prioritising form, discipline and cohesion as the team is likely to come under siege in the group that also includes Checkia (Thursday, 18 June 2026) and the hard-running and inventive South Koreans (Thursday, 25 June).

Kaizer Chiefs’ in‑form goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was one of the notable omissions from Hugo Broos’ final Bafana Bafana World Cup squad. So too was Patrick Maswanganyi, who has been showing his brilliance in the colours of Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates and Mohau T Nkota, the 21‑year‑old South African winger/forward currently playing for Al‑Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
Surprise inclusions in Hugo Broos’ final Bafana Bafana World Cup squad include uncapped youngsters Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union, USA) and Bradley Cross (Kaizer Chiefs) but the inclusion of the Chicago Fire on fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi can hardly be said to be surprise selection. But collectively, some say with the selection of the three is a bold move, signaling that Broos is intent to reward emerging talent and broaden defensive options.
In the midfield he was spoilt for choice as he has opted for both creative experience of Mamelodi Sundowns Themba Zwane, with Pirates emerging hardman Thalente Mbatha, will be joined by Teboho Mokoena, has become the heartbeat of Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. Other notable inclusion is Pirates duo of Lereng Mofokeng and Oswin Appolis, who will be joined by captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, whose leadership from the back has been vital, and striker Lyle Foster, South Africa’s Premier League forward who carries the nation’s attacking hopes.
It is not clear how far will South Africa’s campaign go in the upcoming World Cup, with many suppporters saying that South Africa should not hope for anything further than playing the three group games, go for sight-seeing before returning home. But President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was hopeful that they will surprise everyone in the cup, even taking it from the clutches of rivals, so that he can gladly declare a holiday when they come back to parade the cup home.
