South Africa coach Hugo Broos insists Bafana Bafana won’t be intimidated by the roar of 87,000 fans at the Estadio Azteca, promising discipline and belief against hosts Mexico in Thursday’s 2026 World Cup opener. With Ronwen Williams leading from the back and Lyle Foster spearheading the attack, Broos says his side “knows exactly what to do” to silence the noise and stick to the plan.

Hugo Broos is confident Bafana Bafana will not be overawed when they walk into a cauldron of noise at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, insisting his side knows exactly what to do against co-hosts Mexico in the 2026 World Cup opener.
“Bafana Bafana will be ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium,” Broos said on Monday from the team’s Pachuca base.
“We know what to do against Mexico. We know what to do when they have the ball and when we have possession. The final details will be worked on in our next two training sessions. Everything is focused on this game,” he added.
The Belgian also made it clear the crowd won’t win the game for either side. “It will be a special and fantastic experience for us because my players have never played in this kind of situation before. So it will be very important for us to stick to the game plan and not listen to what is happening in the stands,” Broos warned.

Fans Can’t Play The Game
South Africa learned that lesson in 2010. Bafana had the entire country behind them at Soccer City when they opened the World Cup against Mexico. The vuvuzelas shook the stadium, Siphiwe Tshabalala scored that goal, but the match still finished 1-1. Sixteen years later, history repeats itself at the Azteca, but Broos knows atmosphere doesn’t score goals.
“A football match is a football match. We must not think we have no chance against Mexico, because that is not true either. But we have to prepare very well and play at our best level,” he said.
Mexico Go In As Favourites
The hosts are the clear favourites on Thursday. Local and international betting markets have Mexico priced well ahead of Bafana, with the hosts backed to start emphatically in front of 87,000 fans.
El Tri will have everything going for them: altitude, home soil, and a nation demanding nothing less than a statement win to kick off their tournament. Broos knows how dangerous they are: “They are all dangerous, they are a very good team with much movement and solidarity. You can see they really want to be world champions. Nothing other than our best level will suffice.”
Broos’ Choices Will Decide It
Broos says “75% of the team is already in my head” and he won’t change it even after a bad game. So the outcome will come down to the options he backs.
In goal, Ronwen Williams remains the undisputed No.1 and captain. In defence, Broos will lean on experience mixed with youth - Khuliso Mudau’s energy at right-back, Mbekezeli "TLB" Mbokazi, who is available again after his red card vs Zimbabwe, is expected to lead in the middle of defence, partnering with some of the finest central defenders and Aubrey Modiba, who trained for a second day and looks set to slot in at left-back.
Midfield is where Broos has the most trust. Teboho Mokoena will anchor things with his range of passing, while Themba Zwane’s creativity will be key if Bafana are to get on the ball against a high-pressing Mexico. Lere Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko and Oswin Appollis give Broos pace out wide to hit on the break.
Up front, Lyle Foster leads the line. His work rate and ability to hold up play will be vital against Mexico’s centre-backs, with Broos expecting him to stretch the hosts.
Whatever combination Broos chooses, it will have to be perfect. Mexico in Mexico City is a different test. The crowd will demand an emphatic start. Bafana will need to be disciplined, compact, and clinical. As Broos put it: “A football match is a football match.”
