KwaZulu‑Natal courts have handed down multiple life sentences in rape cases within days, with the NPA vowing to pursue sexual offenders relentlessly as part of its Serial Rapist Prioritisation Initiative.

On Monday this week, 1 September 2026, the Durban Regional Court sentenced a 47‑year‑old man to life imprisonment after convicting him of raping three women in Chatsworth, Savannah Park and Welbedacht between 2013 and 2021.

The court heard that the convicted rapist (whose name has been withheld to protect the victims) kidnapped two of the victims, assaulted one with a broken beer bottle, and evaded arrest for years before DNA evidence finally linked him to the crimes in March 2024.

Tanuja Bechan, the lead prosecutor in the cases, led nine witnesses, including medical experts and the complainants themselves. Victim impact statements revealed the devastating toll: one woman forced to relocate, another socially withdrawn, and a third robbed of the future she had envisioned.

Disabled Neighbour

In another separate case, on Friday last week (29 August 2026) the Ulundi Regional Court sentenced a 34‑year‑old man to life imprisonment for raping his 15‑year‑old neighbour, a mentally disabled girl, on two occasions in Mahlabathini.

He threatened to kill her family if she spoke out. The complainant eventually confided in her teacher, leading to his arrest. Prosecutor Khethiwe Buthelezi presented victim impact evidence showing the girl now struggles with sleeplessness and anger.

Mentally-disabled colleague

On that same Friday (29 August 2026), the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced another 34‑year‑old man to life imprisonment for raping a mentally disabled colleague on three occasions between 2022 and 2023. The complainant disclosed the abuse to her mother, who alerted police. Prosecutor Jabulani Maphumulo presented medical and psychological evidence, while a victim impact statement revealed the woman now lives in fear and isolates herself.

KwaZulu‑Natal has officially recorded the highest number of rape cases in South Africa, with 8,186 incidents reported in the 2025/26 financial year and 1,820 cases in just the first quarter of 2026/27. This cements the province as a national hotspot for sexual violence.

Police flagged eThekwini, uMgungundlovu and northern districts as high‑incidence areas, while activists warned the figures reflect both entrenched abuse and a growing willingness of survivors to come forward.

“These successful prosecutions forms part of our Serial Rapist Prioritisation Initiative,” said NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson‑Kara.
